| MANHATTAN, KS – With a Chapter goal of finishing in the top eight of the fraternity league rankings for the 2009-2010 academic year, the Acacia football squad and the soccer team have placed a huge importance on jump-starting the season with early victories and riding that success into the playoffs. It turns out that both teams have achieved tremendous success, just in a little more unconventional way.
After dropping the first two games against Sigma Pi and Beta Theta Pi by just eight points each, the football team won the last two games in stunning fashion during a doubleheader on September 29th. Needing to win both games to be included in the playoff contingent, the Chapter beat Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity 30–24 and beat Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity 54-14.
The goal was not only to win both games but to make strides towards becoming a team that could threaten for the title in the playoffs, and the squad did just that. While trying to stop the Alpha Tau Omega offense, the stiff Acacia defense pulled down one interception to protect an 18-12 lead at the half. The Acacia offense amassed 345 yards of total offense, including an incredible 60 yard drive with two plays left in the game while trailing by just a single point. On the final play, Quarterback Young Man Brandon Litch dove over the plane from 2 yards out to seal the victory and keep the Chapter's playoff hopes alive.
The first win of the season was the confidence boost needed to carry the team to the playoffs as the squad looked like a veteran team against Alpha Gamma Rho. The offense scored six touchdowns while the defense put in its fair share, pulling down three interceptions.
"We knew what we had to do, so we all collectively put full effort into getting these two wins," said intramural chairman Br. Blake Koblitz '09. "Once we are in the playoffs, anything can happen. We are just glad we gave ourselves a chance."
This marks the second consecutive year that the Acacia intramural football team has advanced to the postseason.
For the first time since returning to campus in 2001, the Chapter has fielded an intramural soccer team in the fraternity division. The squad’s record currently stands at 1-1 after adding a 2-1 victory over Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity last week. Br. Tyler Oblinger '09 secured the victory for the Black and Gold, scoring two goals.
Nabbing playoff spots in both football and soccer will go a long way in developing confidence needed for the Chapter to can crack the top eight in the intramural fraternity rankings.
