Acacia Wins Float, WRL for a Top Four Finish during Homecoming 11/3/2009
MANHATTAN, KS – Hours of building and preparing, cheering and dancing, and lots of winning highlighted Acacia's celebration of Kansas State Homecoming 2009. The Men of Acacia joined partners Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity to finish fourth overall among Greek pairings during the week of October 18-24, 2009. The pairing won two of the more prestigious events throughout the week including the best Homecoming Float and top Wildcat Request Live performance. The theme for this year’s Homecoming celebration was "Wildcat Frontier." As an added twist to the theme, Acacia and their homecoming partners amended the theme to the "Final Frontier," and the race for space.
Homecoming 2009 got off to a "running start" with the annual 5K race held on Sunday, October 18. Nine Men of Acacia joined over 1,100 runners this year to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Riley County.
On Monday, the Women of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority invited the Chapter over to their Chapter house for a pizza party before the Pant the Chant Competition. Pant the Chant is an annual Homecoming event where Greek pairings and campus organizations yell a chant that is choreographed to clapping, stomping, and gestures. 70 participants from this year's pairing screamed as loud as they could in front of 1,000 Greeks in Bramlage Coliseum.
Tuesday of homecoming week marks the Paint the 'Ville competition in Aggieville. For the 2009 Homecoming festivities, K-State Acacia and homecoming partners painted the windows to Ballard’s Sporting Goods. Willie the Wildcat and everyone’s favorite coach, Bill Snyder, herded home the Colorado Buffalos through space in the Final Frontier.
Wildcat Request Live, a dance and lip sync competition, is wildly regarded by many Greeks to be the most exciting of the Homecoming activities. The 2009 edition of the competition proved to be thrilling as the Men of Acacia danced their way to a first place finish in the event on Wednesday. Music to Transformers, Space Odyssey, and Space Jam comprised the routine to Willie’s Final Frontier as Willie defeated the evil space buffalo. Other activities throughout the week include Yard Art, which was housed on the Acacia front lawn, and the Children’s Carnival.
To conclude the 2009 Homecoming festivities, the Chapter and Homecoming partners marched through the streets of Aggieville in the annual Homecoming parade. In an attempt to "shoot for the stars," the Chapter's float consisted of a paper-mache lunar surface, complete with Willie the Wildcat posting the K-State flag on the moon and a rocket that got him there. The outstanding dedication and effort the pairing put into the float paid off and K-State Acacia and partners placed first in the float competition. The parade is a significant event for the Chapter to interact with Homecoming partners and represent the Chapter to the Manhattan Community.
Acacia's top-four overall finish continued the tradition of Homecoming week success for the Chapter. The Homecoming results marked the second consecutive year that K-State Acacia has placed in the Top Four in the Greek pairings. It was the third straight year an Acacia pairing has placed in the Wildcat Request Live competition and Children's Carnival event.
The success of the week is culmination of the many hours put in by every member of the Chapter. Br. Josh Neufeld '09 served as Homecoming Chair and represented Acacia throughout the week while organizing the Chapter's efforts. Other event chairman include: Br. Brett Engleman '09 (Pant the Chant), Br. Chris Connell '08 (Float Competition), Br. Nathan Lechtenburg '09 (Paint the Ville), Br. Austin Enns '09 (Children’s Carnival).
Top Placing by Acacia, Gamma Phi Beta, and Beta Theta Pi by event: OVERALL: 4th Place, SPIRIT SIGN: 5th Place, WILDCAT REQUEST LIVE: 1st Place, CHILDREN'S CARNIVAL: 3rd Place, FLOAT COMPETITION: 1st Place
