Acacian Headed to Haiti to Help Earthquake Relief 1/14/2010
Wally Walstrom '06 heads to Haiti two days after the massive earthquake to deliver medical supplies, volunteer his expertise and help with anything on the ground.
Walstrom travels to the impoverished Caribbean nation with a team of students from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience.
Originally planning a trip to help the Royals international baseball camp in the adjacent Dominican Republic, the team will instead direct efforts at serving those in greatest need.
"It was suppose to be a mission trip, but now it's turned into a disaster relief trip for Haiti. We've been busy packing supplies all morning," Walstrom said.
Walstrom service-focus lifestyle reminds all Acacians of their drive to better the global community.
"We're all pretty excited to get down there and help, but don't even know what we'll be doing,” Walstrom said. “The Minister of Health emailed us this morning and just said to bring surgery supplies and wanted a list of all the medical staff that would be there." Br. Walstrom '06 joined the K-State Acacia chapter while pursing his Nutrition and Exercise studies on campus. An active member of the Kansas State Track and Field team, the Marysville, Kansas native competed in pole vault.
"It was the Drive-By-Raking service project that first caught my attention and pulled me to this house," said Walstrom. "I quickly learned more and more about Acacia’s emphasis on leadership and their desire to be involved with the community. I never thought a fraternity would have so many people interested in the same things I was interested in."
Walstrom is excited to bring his service-oriented agenda to more Acacians.
"I see Acacia getting more and more involved with the surrounding community, while building stronger and stronger leaders," he said. "It is my goal to make sure this happens by continually bringing in the best and most driven individuals we can, and by optimizing their potentials with the programs we already have developed and will continue to develop further."
Wally currently resides in Kansas City, MO and is pursuing his medical degree at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience.
Look for more once Wally returns. Please find ways to donate to a relief effort.
