SMOA Board Committees Complete Strong Year 2/9/2010
Senior Men of Acacia Board of Directors Committee Updates for January 2010
FACILITIES COMMITTEE The facilities team was hard at work during the fall 2009 semester. The House Mothers quarters were renovated into an executive suite that added two more headcount to the house capacity. Facilities were also happy with the work in the kitchen that replaced the stove and remodeled the pantry to hold more storage and get the appliances arranged to be easier to access and use. In August, the committee hosted a great work weekend where a number of alumni, MOA and young men pitched in to get more work done around the house than imagined.
Currently, the Facilities team is reviewing the list of scheduled projects for 2010 from the Capital Improvement Plan. Anticipated projects for the calendar year include: refinishing the main deck wood floor, cleaning the upper and lower floor carpeting and refurbishing the kitchen cabinets and countertops. The committee will also be working with the Mothers’ Club if they choose to remodel the Powder Room.
The biggest challenge for facilities each year is balancing scheduled projects with emergency projects and determining budgets based on house capacity. The more guys in the house the more projects we can do.
There are many ways alumni and friends can support facility improvements and maintenance. From joining the committee to forwarding their opinions on projects, the facilities committee would greatly benefit from additional manpower. The committee hopes to continue the tradition of having a work weekend before the start of semester in August and get as many guys there to help with the easier (non skilled labor) projects. Also, the committee is encouraging donations pledged for specific items or projects that alumni would like to see done.
ALUMNI RELATIONS The Communications Team has many results to feature from 2009. Two "The Acacian" newsletters - successfully mailed to all 550 SMOA addresses on deadline - featured the on-going full house efforts to promote lifelong friendships, personal growth and human service. Additional mailings included postcards for Leadership Weekend, STAG and the end-of-the-year dues notice. The MOA also send their annual Christmas card. The ksuacacia.org website updates and stories exceeded our goal of two per month. A website revision is set for winter break. The strongest communication element has been the Constant Contact emails sent monthly to more than 250 addresses. The BOD will appoint Centennial leadership at the January BOD meeting. The Events calendar is one area to focus improvement. The Oct. Tailgate event reached out to 50 people. The BOD has included more social events with the Royals game, Turner wedding reception and K-State Nov. basketball game. Dates have been set for the 2010 year and we hope to build stronger attendance.
FINANCE COMMITTEE Keeping the dues and donations rolling in, the Finance Team has been busy. We greatly appreciate all of the support from the SMOA. Thank you for the on-going financial gifts. Additionally, we have been working with the MOA to ensure the budget is tuned into house needs. The team has also been planning for the 2010-2011 house bill. Working together with the MOA, we are ready for the coming year. Look for a Dial for Dollars call in February and the opportunities to support STAG weekend in June.
GOOD OF ACACIA COMMITTEE CORE has been the highlight for the GoA Team. The team worked with the exec team and Senior Dean to focus on the Individual Development Plan (IDP) framework with a spotlight on the social, physical, spiritual and mental aspects of Acacians. The CORE Plus event honored Norman House with a special presentation in October. Scholarship selection is underway. We're also working to ensure we retain and attract the best and brightest.
RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE The Recruitment team hopes that alumni will help support the Acacia Leadership Scholarship program again this year by interviewing potiential candidates at the Chapter House. Join us on February 20th and 27th.
DUES TASK FORCE The generosity of many has made this campaign a rousing success, notes Brian Nelson.
In the past two issues of the newsletter you've read messages from the Finance Committee concerning the importance of paying annual dues and contributing to the Acacia Leadership Scholarship fund. I join them in thanking all of you who have so generously supported this important and ambitious fundraising effort. To date, we have raised over $10,000 and we're well on the way to reaching and even surpassing our goal of $15,000 per year in reoccurring contributions. This is the first annual campaign in KSU Acacia history. Thank you to all who have helped so far.
Still, we have six months remaining in our annual campaign and important goals to reach for the Acacia's continued progress as we near the finish line. Another critical campaign goal is raising money for ALS recruitment student scholarships. For me, it is always very gratifying to find ways to help these bright, hardworking students find a way into Kansas State University and the Acacia Leadership program. That's why providing scholarships is so important to the future of Acacia to the recruitment assist deserving students and families, while enabling us to bring young people with great potential and great talent to Acacia leadership program.
Our long term goal for the scholarship portion of the campaign is to raise $150,000 to fully fund the current scholarships. I am happy to report that to date we have exceeded our first stage 2009 goal, but it is still not fully endowed for the future years.
I've often said that when I attend an Acacia event and students speak, they always steal the show. These are talented, dedicated, aspiring young people who are working hard to earn their diplomas. At this point in our campaign we are asking for broad participation from our alumni and friends. All gifts, of any size, can help so much. So thank you for paying your dues and considering a gift for scholarships and for our other much-needed campaign goals.
BOARD DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE The Development Committee has focused on creating a higher priority on succession planning. Providing leadership in getting Board Candidates submitted for nomination consideration. The overall objective is to assure Acacia has proactive leadership bringing forth new solutions and adaptations to meet the ever changing needs of University Students.
To achieve this, the Committee created a Skill and Needs Matrix. We have the Professional Skills Needed and the Geography Representation preferred summarized to assist fitting candidates into Board Positions offering the greatest opportunities for "Making A Difference". Some exciting nominations will be submitted at the annual meeting.
The other significant undertaking this year has been the creation of the Directors' Manual. Simply an organized format to assist Directors in managing the critical elements of director's responsibilities, this manual is updated at each Director's meeting.
We wish to bring more technology application into board meetings and communications. PowerPoint presentations, communications by internet, and video conferencing are just a few techniques we need to become more astute bringing Acacia to the forefront of all leadership organizations. Significant progress has been made the past few years in this area as evidenced by our Acacia website and we expect more in the future.
So if you wish to "Make A Difference" at Kansas State through Acacia please call or email us with your ideas and interests. Time is our greatest asset. Do not let us waste it. You might even ask for a copy of the matrix to ascertain leadership skills we are in need of. We know there is a place for you in the organization.
