Acacia Lends a Hand to Habitat for Humanity

MANHATTAN, Ks. – The weekend of April 23-25 was one of the busiest of the year for K-State Acacia as the Men of Acacia, Senior Men of Acacia and prospective Acacians converged on the chapter house for a weekend of scholarship, entertainment, and service.

Amidst the numerous scholarship/social events over the weekend, a group of twenty Acacians, including Br. Denny Basset '56 and Br. Nate Mentzer '04, volunteered two hours of their Saturday afternoon at the Habitat for Humanity "Re-Store" the Manhattan, KS.

Projects at the Re-Store included organizing and shelving donated items, updating inventory lists, throwing away un-saleable items, and helping unload a large donation of windows that had arrived earlier that afternoon.

"The Senior Men were primarily responsible for arranging the service project at the Re-house," said Br. Taylor Kinney '08. "It is great to see that our alumni continue to have a passion for Human Service once they move on from K-State."

The Habitat for Humanity Re-Store is stocked solely with donated items. These items are then refurbished and re-sold for at a discounted price to the public. All proceeds from the Re-Store are applied directly to its parent organization's main service, building houses for those in need.

In addition to the time spent at the Re-Store on Saturday, Acacia's Duck Race Philanthropy on Sunday, April 25 raised over $500 for Habitat for Humanity. Overall, Leadership Weekend was a fantastic opportunity for K-State Acacia to further its human service and support Habitat for Humanity, a deserving local service organization.
