Spring 2010 CORE Presentations
5/17/2010

The overview for the Spring 2010 semester from Br. Brandon Brunner

January 31: “Successful House Tours.” Br. Brandon Litch and Br. Josh Neufeld.
As we gear up for a crucial recruiting season for Acacia, chapter leadership felt it was important that everyone be able to give a decent house tour. Brothers Litch and Neufeld refreshed us on some chapter history as they took us throughout the chapter house. I personally gave two house tours shortly after that, and I can confidently say that the CORE was successful.

February 14: “Things I should have known, but took me a Masters in Economics to realize.” Br. Tyler Turner.
Brother Turner (‘0 something) began our series of 3 CORE relating to the economy, talking about his personal experience studying the subject. Brother Brunner lead the chapter in discussion spawned from Brother Turner’s CORE.

February 21: “What a newly independent person needs to know to participate in the current macroeconomic climate successfully.” Dr. Daniel Kuester.
Professor Kuester, undergraduate chair of the K-State department of economics, taught us about how we macroeconomically improve our economy.

March 7: “The lifestyle of public relations.” Dr. Donita Whitney-Bammerlin.
Instrumental in Acacia’s refounding, Dr. Whitney-Bammerlin returned to Acacia to talk about how we can improve our public relations. Her CORE quite close to ideal – it was informative, direct, and immediately applicable. She gave specific points of constructive criticism that the chapter immediately took to heart. The chapter has much to learn from Dr. Whitney-Bammerlin – we’re fortunate she’s willing to teach!

March 28: “First Impressions.” Becky Sullivan.
Becky is a junior at K-State, but don’t let her age fool you – she’s talked business with the CEO of Toyota and been National Secretary of FFA. She talked to us, from a student perspective, about how to appear confident in formal and informal situations. Her talk ranged from handshakes to hygiene, and she gave culturally and socially adaptive points to ensure Acacians start off on the right foot.

April 18: “Financial Literacy.” Kansas State Federal Credit Union.
In 2008, KSFCU won the Desjardin Award for Excellence in Financial Literacy Education, in front of the Credit Union National Association’s annual Governmental Affairs Conference, hosted in Washington D.C. Our experience lived up to that standard. We were educated on current relevant issues, such as building a credit score, new credit card laws, and other fiscally important matters.

May 2: “Nonverbal Communications.” Bobby Imbody.
Professor Imbody, Assistant Director of Forensics at K-State and chair of the local forensics district, talked to us about how to control and analyze the flow of communication coming from what a person doesn’t verbally say. In fact, estimates are that between 60-75 percent of communication is nonverbal in nature. His talking points were interesting and relevant – ranging from signals to pick up on in an interview to body language to look for while on a date.

It almost seems like I had more time off than COREs! Here’s what we did the other weeks:
February 7th – Superbowl party
February 28th – ALS interviews
March 14th and 21st – Spring Break
April 4th – Easter
April 11th – US Census Bureau
April 25th – 3rd Annual Acacia-Triangle Duck Race
