Board Appoints Three New Directors 6/9/2010
MANHATTAN, KS – The Kansas State Acacia Alumni Association appointed three new members and reelected the slate of leadership on April 24, 2010 in Manhattan, KS.
Br. Tyler Turner ’01 and Br. Nate Mentzer ’03 and Br. Jeremy Smith ‘02 were officially selected to the 21-member board, while, Br. John Fralick, Michael Meyers, Brad Nelson, Brian Nelson, Dylan Spencer and Denny Bassett were all elected to serve another term.
“Our three newest and the returning Board members bring a renewed drive and interest to make Acacia the greatest experience possible for our scholars and community servants,” said Br. Lucas Shivers ’01, Acacia Alumni Executive Secretary. “They are all practicing the life-long skills of Acacia in their professions, families and community.”
Selecting Leaders The entire membership of Acacia alumni elect the Board of Directors during the annual meeting held in conjunction with Leadership Weekend each April. And, as tradition, the Board selects their Chairman and officers at the quarterly session immediately following.
Br. Gary Haag ’90 was unanimously elected as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the a second term until 2011. Haag runs his family business, Haag Oil Company, operating BP connivance stores. Residing in Topeka, KS with his wife and children, Haag becomes the fifth alum to lead the Association under the new Acacia brand.
Other officers appointed to serve until April 2011 were Br. Bradon Nelson ’86 as the Vice Chair and Br. Michael Meyers ’87 as Treasurer. Br. Lucas Shivers ’01 was appointed as the Executive Secretary while Br. J.J. Jones ’02 will serve another year as the volunteer Chapter Advisor.
Meeting the New Directors With the addition of three new members, the Board of Directors operates with more than 20 Acacians who volunteer their time to the organization.
Br. Tyler Turner ‘01 was born and raised in Stafford, KS. He earned his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics and Animal Science and Industry, then completed his Master's degree in Agricultural Economics. Tyler is currently pursuing a Law Degree at Washburn University and plans to graduate in 2012. Tyler currently lives in Manhattan, KS with his wife Rebecca.
"When I was recruited to help refound Acacia I was immediately impressed with the quality and character of the alumni," said Turner. "Knowing that men like Denny Bassett and Bill Riley were involved with Acacia is ultimately what convinced me to join the fraternity." This will be Tyler's first term on the board, though he has be active in assisting the chapter since the refounding. Over the years he has given several CORE presentations, served as a mentor, assisted with scholarship interviews, and helped plan Stag. "I'm excited to see Acacia grow,” Tyler said. “We have made remarkable strides over the past eight years and I'm glad that I got to be a part of it." Br. Nathan Mentzer ‘03 is a mechanical engineer for Black & Veatch. His wife Heather and he are currently living in Osceola, AR, where Nate is currently a field engineer on a coal-fired power plant.
Outside of work Nate is a coach for the Osceola Boxing Club and along with his wife is a sponsor for the Osceola Youth Center. When not at work or helping around the community, Nate and Heather can be found enjoying the outdoors.
Br. Jeremy Smith ’02 grew up in Overland Park, Kansas and attended Shawnee Mission West H.S. Jeremy joined Acacia Fraternity in the fall of 2002, and he was recruited by Br. Joseph Thomas.
"I really wanted to be a part of something that was bigger than me. Joining the Chapter was one of the best decisions I made at Kansas State University." Jeremy graduated in 04' with an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and obtained his graduate degree in Management in 08' from Baker University.
He currently resides in Lenexa, KS with his wife, Lisa, and son, Carter. He currently works for a Wellness Company that provides on-site and telephonic coaching across the U.S. Jeremy loves to play guitar and banjo in his spare time and is a die-hard KC sports fan. Jeremy is looking forward to meeting the new faces of the Chapter.
