Long-term Goals Cast at Retreat
7/28/2010

BOD meet to plan next year
BOD meet to plan next year
Overland Park, KS - Gathered around the table, the BOD and Exec Team cast a long-term vision for Acacia in 2035.

Together with SMOA and MOA, 18 participants met on Saturday, July 17 in Overland Park. Following the meetings, a group of more than 35 cheered on the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Setting Goals
After reviewing several clips from Jim Collins’ Good to Great concepts of the flywheel and casting a strong vision, we brainstormed on BHAG (pronounced bee-hag, shorthand for “Big Hairy Audacious Goal).

BHAG is a 10-to-30-year objective—like a big mountain to climb—that serves as a unifying focal point of effort, galvanizing people and creating team spirit. It is crisp, compelling and easy to understand.

For Acacia, the BOD discussed the following:
1. Reach to top level of leadership in their profession, community and family
2. Awarded the best chapter in the nation with 100% of members involved in campus and community organizations and 50% in leadership roles
3. Look into plans for new debt-free facility and house as a completely sustainable and the greenest fraternity in Kansas
4. Be known as most recognized and respected fraternity at K-State as a premier leadership development organization for college men and women in the US
5. Become the number one destination for scholars and leaders in Kansas with 30 fully-funded ALS for recruitment

Details of the Day
Opening the 2010 Acacia Retreat, Gary Haag, BOD president, highlighted the accomplishments from the past year including: top chapter in grades, paying off line of credit, strong membership numbers and a contending chapter for the Malcolm Award, the best chapter in the nation.

Participants took on issues relating to cash flow, new facilities, fund raising and branding Acacia. Each SMOA team then addressed their top concerns for the 2010-2011 school year.
Brandon Brunner, Senior Dean, led the MOA’s State of the Fraternity presentation focused on membership recruitment retention.

The BOD sends a special thanks to Brad and Brain Nelson for hosting an evening BBQ before the game on Brian’s poolside deck. Also thanks to Joseph Thomas securing Royals tickets.

Although the Royals couldn’t hold on to a win – even after a grand slam, Acacia celebrated the day and looked forward to another outstanding year.
